Caps Snap Streak, Shoutout Florida

The Washington Capitals ended a six game win drought tonight at the Verizon Center, shutting out the Florida Panthers 1-0 behind a second period goal by Alex Ovechkin. It was Ovechkin's 44th goal of the season and 90th point.

Goalie Olie Kolzig stopped all 27 shots to gain his first shutout since February of 2004. He was perfect. And it was much needed after a tumultuous week that led to a frustrated outburst by Ovechkin. The Washington Post coverage of the game had some interesting comments by Coach Greg Hanlon on the remaining few games.

Quite the opposite, Coach Glen Hanlon said. The final games are an opportunity for the club's multitude of youngsters to solidify a spot on next year's roster. And for those who don't factor into the Capitals' future plans, they are being evaluated by other teams.

"Our rallying cry has been to play like you are going to play next year," Hanlon said before the game. "I want them to show me something."

The Capitals will have a much watched off-season. After several years of a rebuild, the fan base is growing tired of losing ways with the Capitals and the prevailing thought out there is clear, this is a critical off-season for GM George McPhee.

Quick Blurb: Capitals 2004 seventh round draft selection Andrew Gordon has signed a three year entry contract today.

Peak at Hershey:

The Bears fell Sunday night to Wilkes-Barre Scranton 3-2. The Bears have clinched a playoff spot, but lead in the Eastern Division by just 1 point, 104-103, over Norfolk. The Wilkes Barre Scranton win pulled WBS to 4 points being Hershey with 100 points.

Next up for Hershey will be tomorrow night at 7:05PM in Binghamton. Go Bears!
